Employee Christmas Gifts: Ideas, Budget & Logistics
Christmas gifts for the team: what really lands, how to allocate budget wisely — and how the logistics work for 50 or 500 employees.
11. June 2026 · UNICUM Merchandising
Shortly before year-end, many companies ask the same question: what do we give the team? The Christmas gift for employees is more than a year-end tradition — it's a moment of appreciation that sticks. Or doesn't, when it's done wrong. This guide shows what really lands, how to allocate budget wisely, and how the logistics work for larger teams.
What makes a good employee Christmas gift
The worst Christmas gift is the generic one: red wine no one drinks, chocolates that sit around in the office, a calendar for next year. The good Christmas gift meets three criteria:
- It gets used. An item used daily carries the brand longer than a decorative object.
- It has quality. Employees immediately notice whether something is cheap or premium. Quality signals: you are worth it to us.
- It fits the company culture. A startup gifts differently than a corporation. The gift should reflect the company's identity.
Ideas by category
Classic & durable
- Premium thermos or coffee mug: Used daily, durable, visible. With logo engraving or subtle lettering.
- Notebook set: Notebook plus pen as a coordinated piece, with company logo — a classic that is never wrong at good quality.
- Specialty food selection: Coffee specialities, regional honey, premium chocolate — individually curated, not off the shelf.
Branded & identity-building
- Hoodie or sweatshirt: Christmas is the best moment for a textile that is also worn in leisure time. GOTS-certified quality from Stanley/Stella makes the difference between "worn" and "in the wardrobe".
- Branded beanie or socks: A small, low-cost addition — but with strong presence in winter. Unexpected items stick in memory.
- Backpack or bag: For a slightly bigger budget — a companion that is visible for the brand for years.
Experience-oriented
- Experience voucher: Concert tickets, wellness offers or local experiences — especially for employees who "have everything".
- Team event: Instead of an individual gift, a shared experience. Effective for team culture, but hard to scale.
Budget: orientation and tax note
A typical corridor for Christmas gifts is between €20 and €80 per person. What matters is consistency: all employees receive the same — differences by hierarchy can cause resentment.
Tax note: Non-cash gifts to employees may be tax-privileged up to the monthly non-cash benefit threshold. Please clarify the specific requirements with your tax advisor, as this depends on your individual situation.
The logistics question: who ships what where?
For small teams (up to ~20 people) manual distribution is still manageable. From 50 employees — and certainly with remote teams and decentralised locations — logistics becomes the actual challenge.
Typical problems: ordered too late, wrong textile sizes, gifts not arriving on time, no solution for home-office addresses. The answer is a structured process:
- Central procurement: Consistent quality across all locations.
- Warehousing: Products arrive in Bochum and are stored ready to ship.
- Direct dispatch: To office addresses, home-office addresses or any location — with a click from the HR system.
This is the core service of the UNICUM Onboarding Box as a full-service offering. The same fulfilment used for onboarding boxes can be used for seasonal gift programmes. Set up once, call off every year — without renewed coordination effort.

Frequently asked questions
When should I start planning?
By September at the latest, if you order textiles or individually finished items. Production and logistics need a 4–8 week lead time. Companies with a warehoused programme can wait until November — but the programme itself must be in place earlier.
How do I deal with different preferences in the team?
The easiest path: one premium standard gift for everyone that excludes nobody (no alcohol, no foods with allergen potential). Variations through a closed employee store — employees choose from a curated selection.
What if we are late this year?
For short-notice needs from 20 units without individual finishing, quick delivery is possible. For branded items with embroidery or print: realistically a 3–4 week lead time after ordering is required.
